A Practical Checklist Before You Migrate to the Cloud
Cloud migration projects fail more often from missing prep work than from the migration itself. Here's our pre-migration checklist.
Most cloud migration horror stories don't happen during the migration — they happen because of what wasn't done beforehand. Before we touch a single server, we work through the same checklist with every client.
First: inventory everything, including the undocumented cron job someone set up three years ago that nobody remembers. Second: classify data by sensitivity and compliance requirement before deciding where it lives. Third: right-size before you lift-and-shift — migrating an oversized on-prem box as-is just moves the waste to a bigger bill. Fourth: plan your rollback path before you need it, not during an incident.
Get these four right and the actual migration is usually the easy part. Skip them, and even a technically flawless migration can turn into a support nightmare in week two.
